Chapter 5 has incorporated concepts from all of the previous chapters. It uses the integer rules from Chapter 2. It adds and subtracts like terms (in fractional form) and solves equations…all based from Chapter 3. It also extends our work with monomials (Chapter 4) by multiplying and dividing them.
As you may have noticed, mathematics is like building a house. You have to have a foundation in order to continue building the next level. If there are foundational gaps, we can sometimes fill them in as we go along, but at other times, these gaps can cause an entire section of the house to collapse.
Answer the following questions in complete sentences. You may do this in three different posts or all in one post.
1) Do you still have foundational gaps in your mathematical knowledge? (aka: Are there concepts that you still do not understand?) If so, what are they? Be honest.
2) Look ahead to Chapter 6. Pick at least two sections and discuss how you think you will need to incorporate knowledge from Chapter 2-5. Be specific.3) This was the first time you had to study for a mathematics final. How did you study for the final? Do you think you were prepared? What should you have done differently?
1. This year I had difficulties in graphing inequalities, but now I can solve it. I no longer have foundational gaps in my mathematical knowledge.
ReplyDelete2. I need to know about order of operations in order to solve multi-step equations. We need to know simple variable expressions to solve equations with variables on both sides.
3. Before I took the final, our class did a scavenger hunt. It was not boring and it was a very fun way to learn math. I reviewed my math tests and test correction at home. I looked over what I got wrong and I solved and resolved the questions. I think I was prepared. I should have done more word problems.
1) I don't get changing repeated decimal into fraction.
ReplyDelete2) I am kind of confused with deciding with positive and negative because the subtracting, adding, dividing ,and multiplying is different.
3) In online text book I saw the examples that they gave me and I thought I was prepared and the there was only little difficult part but rest of them was easy
1) I didn't get the word problems that were connected to d=rt.
ReplyDelete2) I need to know how to find the circumference of the circle, and have to be able to know how to multiply and divide decimals.
3) I have solved nearly all the problems and word problems in the textbook and did the scavenger hunt during class.
1. This year I had trouble with graphing the periodic table onto the number line. I did not know which way the arrow would go when it was greater than or less than the variable. This confused me a little but now I understand it completely.
ReplyDelete2. for chapter six, I need to improve on my variables and not getting confused on which variable is which. Also, I need to review my circles again and how to get the circumference and the area of the circle.
3. I think I was prepared for the final exam. I am proud of my test and I think I did very well, for now. However, when I was studying my previous test's, I got distracted sometimes and strayed off track.
1- I think that there is a mathematical Knowledge for me is that the problem solvings and the LCM AND GCF because for problem solving, sometimes i do not understand the question and then get really confused. for LCM and GCF, something I dont understand is when you put the exponent, i get confused of if LCM has the bigger exponent or if GCF does.
ReplyDelete2- Im also sometimes confused with Positive and Negative because I forget about the negative and positive and get points off
3- I looked at chapter 6 and thought of asking some questions about some questions and also saw that some were hard and some were easy.
1. Even though I have learned the concept of turning repeated decimal into fraction, I was a bit confused on the long way of solving it.
ReplyDelete2. I was sometimes confused when using distributive property in a equation. I was mostly confused especially when the question was long. Another one was solving a multi-step questions.
3. I studied the final by looking over my old tests and trying to solve the questions again. On some of the questions I had difficulties so I had to ask my parents. I mostly studied the word problems because it was the weak part for me to solve. I think I have prepared very well.
1) I never really learned multiplication and division so GCF, LCM, LCD and multiplying/dividing fractions.
ReplyDelete2) Lesson 6.1, solving multi-step equations is like lesson 1.5 (equations and solutions)are similar because they are both about solving equations and to solve multi-step equations, you must understand how to write simple equations and then solve them. Also, knowing the order of operations is a very important thing to know.
3) I studied two or three days before the test and focused only on things I thought I needed help on so I didn't review things like GCF and LCM so I couldn't remember how to solve it on the exam because I focused on other things that weren't even on the exam.
1. I think I'm struggling a little bit on the inequalities part. I always get confused whether or not I should flip the sign, so I just guess sometimes.
ReplyDelete2. The two sections I chose were 6.3 (Solving equations involving fractions and decimals) and 6.6 (Problem solving and inequalities). I think we need to incorporate knowledge from section 5.1 ~ 5.7 in order to learn section 6.3 more effectively because they teach us about how to work with fractions (+, -, / , *), decimals, and how to convert them. For 6.6, I think we need to incorporate knowledge from 3.6 ~ 3.7 because they teach us about solving inequalities using addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division.
3. I studied the final by first reviewing all the previous chapter tests/quizzes and making sure I knew what I got wrong and why. Then I reviewed the questions I got wrong for homework or classwork. After I reviewed everything, I solved some word problems in the textbook. I think I was prepared, but the next time I'm preparing for the finals, I would solve more word problems, because I think that is my weakest point in tests.
1. I think graphing the inequality was a little challenge to me. I know how to solve but its still confusing like the - sign. If you divide or multiply with the - sign the sign switches.
ReplyDelete2.I can use the same resource from the previous chapter. Like Decimal and Fraction. I can't believe that Decimal and Fraction comes out it chapter 6. Also I can use the adding and subtracting like terms for collecting like terms from chapter 6.
3. I was pretty nervous for the final. I thought it was going to be ridiculously hard but I found it out it wasn't that hard. I studied the final by taking some notes and remembering the activities we did and also by looking at the previous homework. I think I was prepared but I think I should have studied more on word problems and inequality.
1) I don't really get the graphing part exactly because I think it is confusing that you have to flip when you divide or multiply by a negative number.
ReplyDelete2) I think that we have to use the distributive properties from chapter 2. We should also have to use combining like terms from chapter 2.
3) I studied all the work I did before from all the chapters. I think that I did well on solving every problem that I got wrong in the Chapter 1 through 4 test. However, I wasn't sure of the correct answer for them so for that part, I wasn't really sure.
1. I didn't really know how to solve the GCF and LCM of the monomials because sometimes I get confused and do the opposite. And I'm not really sure how to change a repeated decimal into a fraction.
ReplyDelete2. I need to work on the circumference of a circle, and also the area because the formulas for both confuses me sometimes. And also solving the inequalities is hard because sometimes I forget to switch the sign when it is multiplied/divided by a negative, so I also get the graphing part wrong.
3. I studied the final by going to my hakwon, and asking the teacher the concepts I don't really know. I took some of the questions from the section and I tried to do them myself. I had looked back in my other notebook and at least tried to memorize how to solve it, for example, changing the repeated decimal into a fraction.
1. I don't think so..... maybe there is but I just don't know what it is
ReplyDelete2.I think I should be more confident because sometimes when I'm nervous I do it as fast as possible that makes silly mistakes.
3.I just looked back at what we did and made some notes on the important stuff and thought about it every time I remembered it. But oeverall I was well prepared and the test was easier than I thought.
1) Do you still have foundational gaps in your mathematical knowledge? (aka: Are there concepts that you still do not understand?) If so, what are they? Be honest.
ReplyDeleteI think I still don't completely understand the 'changing decimals into fractions' part. Especially repeated decimals.
2) Look ahead to Chapter 6. Pick at least two sections and discuss how you think you will need to incorporate knowledge from Chapter 2-5. Be specific.
6.2 Solving equations with variables on each side, because we may need to incorporate our knowledge about variables and solving equations, and simplifying. Also, 6.6 Problem Solving and inequalities, because we might need to combine problem solving and inequalities.
3) This was the first time you had to study for a mathematics final. How did you study for the final? Do you think you were prepared? What should you have done differently?
I studied by reading through the textbook and looking at examples. But I think I should have solved more problems and practicing my math skills.
1) I think I still have some gaps between some of them, for example I sometimes get confused with integers when I add this and that so on. I also had a little hard time on changing fractions to decimals and decimals to fraction using the long new way.
ReplyDelete2)I also had a problem at the distributive property in a equation. I got confused and also missed some parts like when negative and negative meets it gets to a positive etc. I got confused mostly with the long ones.
3)I think I didn't prepare well, because just the day before the final I studied late at night, but it did help a bit. If I hadn't done it the day before, but done for several days I think it will give a full effect on my final.
1. I've been having a little difficulties with problem solving questions. I think this difficulty might have occurred because I simply did not understand the question or I did understand but did not know what to do. Graphing the inequalities also confused me. After I solved the inequality, I often found myself pondering about which directions to go.
ReplyDelete2. I think 6.5 and 6.6 are some of the sections that I have difficulties because they include both problem solving and the inequalities. These two sections are related with 3.6 and 3.7. These sections are about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing inequalities. Without being sure about 3.6 and 3.7, it seems that I would be having difficulties with 6.5 and 6.6. 6.5 and 6.6 includes inequalities with distributive properties and problem solving.
3. While studying for my first math final, I wrote notes for every single sections in the chapter. I also reviewed them and saw if I needed any practice for the sections. If I did need any practice, I went to the exercise part for each section and solved them and checked the answers. I worked extra hard in problem-solving and inequality questions. Because this was my first final, I worked very hard.
1) Do you still have foundational gaps in your mathematical knowledge? (aka: Are there concepts that you still do not understand?) If so, what are they? I have a lot of foundational gaps like graphing inequalities and not understanding what the word problem is asking for
ReplyDelete2) Look ahead to Chapter 6. Pick at least two sections and discuss how you think you will need to incorporate knowledge from Chapter 2-5. Be specific. I need to work on my decimals and fractions in chapter 6.
3) This was the first time you had to study for a mathematics final. How did you study for the final? Do you think you were prepared? What should you have done differently?
To tell the truth I just went over the study guide for the scavenger hunt. I guess i was a little unprepared. I should have went over the textbook one more time
1. I still have foundational gaps. I still don't scientific notation. I know how to do it, but I still don't know it very well. And also, I don't still get the word problems. I know what problem asks me to do, but I can't solve it.
ReplyDelete2.I think I have to work the 6.1 Solving multi-Step Equations and the 6.3 Solving Equations Involving Fractions and Decimals. Because I think these two sections are the hardest in the Chapter 6. Also, I should know how to solve the x and how to solve the both sides in the 6.1. Also, I should know how to solve the fractions and the decimals, and how to solve the x in the both sides.
3.Fot the math finals, I made the note for the math. So I could look all over the math that I did in first semester. And I tried to understand all of the chapter that I did. I also solve the problem which was in the text book. and ask the questions to my parents and my friends if I don't know something. For the next semester, I should ask more help if I don't know something. I didn't check the problems that I solve for the finals. So I don't know its right or wrong. So I think ,I should check the problems that I solve, so I know what is wrong or not.
1)Yes, I do still have gaps in my mathematical knowledge. I am still not sure on changing repeated decimals into fractions. For some decimals I can change into fractions, but for some, I have difficulties. The other thing is solving word problems. I understand the question, but sometimes I get confused on what I have to do, to solve the questions.
ReplyDelete2)For chapter 6 section 3, which is solving equations involving Fractions and Decimals, you need to know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and decimals. In chapter 5 sections 1-7 you learned that.
For chapter 6 section 5, which is solving multi-step inequalities, you need to know how to solve inequalities and how to solve equations that require more than one step. In chapter 3 section 6 and 7, you learned that.
3)Since I wasn’t here for chapter 1, 2, and most of 3, I looked back in the textbook and did most of the questions, but if there were 12 questions of one concept, I did about half. Then, I looked over all the chapters and tests. I tried to understand everything. On things I didn’t understand, I asked my friends or my dad. I should have asked more questions, on things I had trouble understanding and I should have looked over more word problems because I think word problems are my weakest point.
